I Love New York
There are certain things you could only happen upon in New York. These things are a bit like four leaf clovers. You just have to take the time to stop when you think you see one. Such was the case for me yesterday. I happened upon a street side window with the most glorious colors of thread hanging from the ceiling. I popped in to discover that I had stumbled upon a piece of Performance Art entitled 700 Spools of Thread, running at specific hours from April 3rd to the 8th, at 226 West 37th Street, with the artist’s reception being this evening from 6-8 pm.
The artist is L. Mylott Manning. This is how the performance is unfolding over 6 days. A woman wears a vest constructed out of 100′s of spools of contemporary and vintage threads. These threads feed into sewing machines run by additional women who construct endless strips of fabric. (Each day an additional machine and woman is added.) Thus the performance is constantly changing. By the performances end, hundreds of threads will stream from the original source and symbolize the ways that woman are pulled in many directions, yet are all connected to each other.
The location of the piece within the Garment District is a way to celebrate the unknown faces of the seamstresses that have manufactured our fashions throughout hisotry, the artist says. Nameless faces constructing the garments we wear every single day.
